Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the library's hours?
You can find the library's current hours here.

  • How many items can I have checked out at once?
Checkout limits by patron type are listed in the circulation policy here.

  • Can I return my items when the library is closed?
Yes, the library has three book drops that are checked each business day. On the Hampton campus, one is located outside the back of the library near the side of Templin Hall, and the other outdoor book drop is located on the basketball court side of Kecoughtan Hall. There is an indoor book drop outside the library's front doors in Kecoughtan Hall. On the Historic Triangle campus in Williamsburg, the outdoor book drop is located on the sidewalk as you approach the building from the front parking lot off Opportunity Way. Outside the library's front doors, there is also a book drop slot. We do ask that any technology items be returned in person to prevent damage or exposed to the elements.

  • What technology is available to check out?
We have the following items available for checkout: computer mouse, USB webcam, Kindle (pre-loaded with popular books), digital camera and tripod, video camera, scientific calculator (students only), graphing calculator (students only), headphones with or without microphone, ring light, and wi-fi hotspots (data limits apply). Borrowers will need to sign an updated equipment agreement before checking out technology for the first time.

  • What happens if I lose or damage an item?
Borrowers will receive multiple emails regarding overdue items and will also receive statements in the mail. Depending on how long the items has been overdue, a borrower's privileges at the library and SIS may be blocked and the account may be turned over to the Business Office for collections. Borrowers may be charged for damage to items that go beyond normal wear and tear. You can view the timetable for consequences related to overdue accounts here.

  • How can I borrow something that is not in the library's collection?
If the library does not own something you would like to borrow, you can submit an interlibrary loan request. Staff will reach out to other libraries, and you will receive communication from the library about whether staff was able to obtain the item from another library.

  • I am on one campus and I want to borrow an item that is at the other campus library. Can I do that without having to go to the other campus?
Yes, borrowers can request items from either campus by placing a hold request and choosing their desired pickup location. For a step-by-step guide, see the "Placing a Hold" tab on the left. Please note that transporting items between campuses may take up to three business days depending on staff location and schedule.
